
The Oglesby Mansion and Museum will pay tribute to Harvest season by having board Vice President Bill Horton portray Governor Oglesby with a special 2pm presentation on Sunday, September 28th.
Bill will present The Indian Corn, Impromptu Speech of Gov. Richard J. Oglesby. The speech was made at the Fellowship Club at Chicago, September 9th, 1894, during the Occasion of the Harvest Home Festival.
The speech is known for praising the resilience and industry of the American farmer and exhorting his fellow citizens to honor the principles of hard work and social responsibility. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Governor was well-known around the world as an orator.
Tours will follow the presentation.
The Governor Richard J. Oglesby Mansion and Museum located at 421 West William Street will be Open on Saturday, September 28th (2pm-4pm). A $5 per adult and $2 per child donation is requested. Tourists are encouraged to take pictures inside the home. Tours are hosted by volunteer docents, current and past members of the board of directors of the mansion. The Mansion is in the historic district in the Millikin Heights neighborhood in Decatur.
The Mansion will be open on the last Sunday of each month through November.
