The Governor Richard J. Oglesby Mansion and Museum located at 421 West William Street (Decatur) will be hosting an Open House on Sunday, April 26^th (2pm-4pm).  Tourists are encouraged to take pictures inside the home. Tours are hosted by volunteer docents, current and past members of the board of directors of the mansion.  Suggested donation of $5 per adult and $2 per child.  All donations go to maintain the contents of the museum.

“The Oglesby Mansion and Museum board are beyond grateful for the concerns from the public and the heroic actions of the Decatur Fire Department.  We will be hosting our events this weekend and next week our play performances pre-scheduled 5th grade classes are a go,” says Dave Davis, President of the board of directors. The mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places. The home is filled with many original features and actual Oglesby artifacts.  We are pleased to be able to host our planned events.

This winter the Governor Oglesby Mansion board voted to hire Peerless Cleaners to come and do a deep cleaning. This included the chandeliers being cleaned by hand by the staff and they are sparkling for our season. Some of the other tasks they completed were an appropriate vacuuming of drapes, carpets and deep cleaning of rugs and carpets.  “This is an effort to maintain the museum at the highest of standards for our tours and events,” said Board President Dave Davis. “We take great pride in maintaining the legacy of Governor Oglesby.”

Spring décor was placed throughout the home by members of the Garden Club of Decatur.  Davis goes on to say “we appreciate community partners like the garden club.  They also decorate the home for our Christmas festivities.”

The Mansion is in the historic district in the Millikin Heights neighborhood.  The mission of the board of the Museum is to educate citizens of all ages about the legacy of Governor Oglesby.  The Governor Oglesby Mansion and Museum is the only museum dedicated to the life legacy of Richard J. Oglesby.  The Governor’s mansion is owned by the  Macon County Conservation District and the contents are maintained by the Governor Oglesby Mansion, Inc board of directors.

The Mansion will also be open on the last Sunday of each month through November.
